Seattle, WA, January 02, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Treehouse, Washington’s leading nonprofit supporting youth in foster care, announces adjustments to the organization’s Driver Assistance Program that come with paying for broader services.

As of July 10, 2023, Treehouse began covering the charge of car bill renewal, car fuel, comprehensive auto insurance, car maintenance, and more, in addition to educational drivers, licensing and exam fees, and third-party auto insurance, which it traditionally covered. .

“A driver’s license is a rite of passage for many young adults and a necessity for school reports and homework opportunities,” said Sarah Mazur, Treehouse’s financial resources program manager. “Getting your driver’s license is even more vital for those who live in rural spaces where public transportation is inaccessible or unreliable. “

Since 2017, the Driver Assistance Program has supported more than 1,800 [KA1] [VK2] youth by offering them monetary assistance to download their driver’s license.

As a program funded through the Washington State Legislature’s transportation budget, the law authorizing the program used language that limited the spending that could be funded. This language was expanded in the 2023 legislative session.

To be eligible for motive force assistance, youth must be between the ages of 15 and 20 and have an open state or tribal dependency registration (including long-term foster care) in Washington State. No referral required. Eligible youth or their guardians can apply for assistance online and eligibility will be verified through the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) or the Director of Tribal-Specific Indian Child Protection (ICW).
