LONDON, Jan. 9, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — 70% of Britons say that United Utilities, the water company serving the North West of England, deserves to continue to allow capercaillie hunting on land they own, according to a survey of 1,000 people in the UK. adults.
The survey was commissioned through the United Utilities Advisory Panel (UUCP) in reaction to statements through United Utilities that it was contemplating banning grouse hunting on land it rents. The move sparked outrage from tenants, who rely on hunting, especially grouse hunting, for their livelihoods.
The survey also found that 85% of respondents believe that United Utilities should have consulted with the local community before making major changes to its land management practices.
“This survey shows that British citizens are firmly on the side of tenants in this debate. Not only is the shooting a vital source of income for farmers and rangers, but it has also proven to be a vital source for the local environment: preserving the rare heather wastelands, selling biodiversity and reducing the threat of wildfires,” said UUCP spokesperson Jo Pearson.
“United Utilities consults with local stakeholders, including farmers and land managers, before making such major adjustments to the way the land it owns is managed. These decisions have huge ramifications for both humans and the herb world, not to mention the quality of the soil. water provided through United Utilities,” Pearson added.
According to the survey, hunting on United Utilities land is highest among older respondents, with 76% of seniors ages 55 to 64 saying the water company deserves to continue allowing grouse hunting in its moors. This figure rises to 81% among those 65 and older.
The survey also asked respondents whether the UK government continues to allow grouse hunting domestically. In total, 66% of them agree and 79% among those over 65.
On the whole, a large proportion of British adults take a dim view of United Utilities, with 44% of survey respondents saying they feel negatively about the water company. Just 19% said they have a positive view about United Utilities, with the remainder saying they feel neutral or didn’t know.
