SOMERVILLE, Mass. , Jan. 9, 2024–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sublime Systems, developer of a scalable, fossil-free option for classic concrete cement, announced that it has secured the site for its first advertising production facility in Holyoke, Massachusetts, after a long era of diligence. The company has signed a deal for 16 acres in the city’s Flats community on Water Street, on an asset that once housed paper generators and runs through Holyoke’s physically powerful hydroelectric resources: critical infrastructure. for Sublime’s fully electrified cement production process.
Holyoke’s Sublime variety for business expansion reflects Mayor Joshua A. ‘s collaboration. Sublime used criteria such as proximity to headquarters, access to talent, renewable electricity supply, demographics, and business permits to identify potential first business locations. Guided by the team at the federal initiative Justice40 designed to deliver public investments to disadvantaged communities, Sublime ultimately chose Holyoke because of the dual opportunity to help local people in the short term while moving towards a rapid and broad impact on global CO2 emissions. . Sublime plans to put its Holyoke plant into operation from 2026 to produce tens of thousands of tons per year of its low-carbon Sublime cement, a “true zero” technique with no fossil fuels or decaying limestone, the two main sources of emissions from classic, highly polluting cement™ production. Sublime will use the plant to increase its visitor base and completely de-risk its generation before building a plant with a capacity of one million tons per year, the duration of classic cement production plants.
Sublime was born of the idea that increasingly reliable, abundant, and inexpensive renewable energy could be used to decarbonize the planet’s dirtiest industries. Holyoke’s abundant hydroelectric power was a major draw for the first commercial site, enabled by the Holyoke Dam and Canal system owned by Holyoke Gas & Electric, whose energy mix comprises over 90% renewable and carbon-free generators.
