It was March 21, 2004. La first season of “The Apprentice” had just aired on television and CNN’s Wolf Blitzer was interviewing business tycoon and longtime U. S. President Donald Trump. At the end of the interview, when the verbal exchange turned to politics and 2004. In the presidential election, Blitzer asked Trump whether he called himself a Democrat or a Republican.
“Well, you’d be surprised if I said that in many cases I identify more as a Democrat,” Trump responded.
Just one sentence later, he says this:
You know, it’s interesting, I’ve been now around long — you know, I think of myself as a young guy, but I’m not so young anymore. And I’ve been around for a long time. And it just seems that the economy does better under the Democrats than the Republicans.
Revisiting this quote after 20 years can be shocking, which is why videos of the clip have been circulating online. Snopes first discovered the clip in a December 28, 2023, Reddit post that garnered over 2000 upvotes, a significant amount for a post. on the site.
To verify this, we searched for the clip on YouTube, but couldn’t find anything. So we cross-referenced the clip with other videos of the interview, such as some other clip posted through CNN Politics’ official Facebook account. Since the camera angle and the outfit were the same, we felt comfortable saying that the clips were from the same interview.
In addition, we found a transcript of the interview and the full March 21 broadcast in which it was featured on CNN’s website.
Trump’s wording in the Reddit clip fits this transcript precisely. While Snopes couldn’t find a precise fit for the express clip from an official CNN account, there is really extensive evidence, adding following articles from reputable news sites like Forbes and CNN, classified political ads. the clip and a transcript of the interview confirming that Trump is indeed saying those words.
As such, we consider this to be true.
