DANVILLE, Calif. — Small towns are known for their close-knit communities, charm and safety, though some small towns are particularly safer than others.
MoneyGeek, a private finance site, asked researchers to analyze FBI data on crime last year in small towns of between 30,000 and 100,000 people.
The report that the safest city in America is located in Monroe Township, a suburb of New York City.
Overall, according to the report, small towns and villages have a 48 percent lower crime rate than large cities.
While many of the safest small communities are found in the Northeast, the Golden State had two cities that made it to the top 15: Rancho Santa Margarita in Orange County and Danville, a suburb in the Bay Area.
Rancho Santa Margarita made the list at #10, with the crime cost per capita tabulating at $81. Following Rancho Santa Margarita, Danville made the list at 14 with a crime cost per capita tabulating at $84.
