Three men from the United Kingdom have been charged in connection with the death of Curry House Sharif Rahman in Owen Sound, Ontario, who died following an attack in 2023.
Rahman died after chasing three men out of his restaurant over an unpaid bill.
On Wednesday, police said 24-year-old Robert Evans had been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the incident.
They also said Robert Busby Evans, 47, has been arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to commit indictable offence while 54-year-old Barry Evans was arrested on Oct. 29 and charged with accessory after the fact to commit indictable offence.
The three men are awaiting extradition to the United Kingdom, before the OPP.
OPP Det. Insp. Jane Conway would not specify where the men were from when speaking to reporters on Wednesday but did thank police in Scotland for their efforts.
“While it is too early to provide a timeline for the extradition, we are pleased to announce that the accused individuals have been arrested,” she said.
Conway also did not provide data on the men’s ties, saying it could jeopardize extradition efforts.
When asked why they were in Canada, Conway only said, “All three individuals are residents of the United Kingdom and they were here visiting Canada.”
It has been 17 months since Rahman died after a brutal attack the small Ontario city located along the shores of Georgian Bay.
The restaurateur remained in a coma after being in the small net in a creek in Georgian Bay, about 3 hours north of Toronto.
He died about a week later which was when police in Owen Sound requested help from the OPP.
“Soon after, police learned that the three male suspects had fled the country, leading to collaboration with international partners to coordinate their arrests abroad,” Conway said.
Rahman’s death hit Ontario’s small network hard, and his circle of relatives gained great support.
Mayor Ian Boddy said shortly after the attack that Sharif is an “outstanding member of our community, who dedicates his time to city and county committees, as well as a successful businessman and a committed man. “
“His passing is a tragic loss for our network, and now is the time to combine compassion and support. Let us all reflect on Sharif’s kindness and love for the network in treating everyone with the same generosity that he embodied,” said the mayor. aggregate.
On Wednesday Owen Sound Police Chief Craig Ambrose said Rahman’s killing “shook the very framework of our city and beyond.”
“Sharif is known by many for his generosity, his involvement in the network and the local restaurant, Curry House,” Ambrose said.
