Athens-Clarke police are investigating a report of gunfire at Hallmark Mobile Home Park in Athens that resulted in the response of a special weapons and tactical unit.
The shooting began around noon Thursday at the cell house on Spring Valley Road in eastern Athens.
Residents called police to report someone firing guns outside a home, according to police Lt. Jody Thompson.
“When they got there, a burglary in progress went out. It was a few houses down and someone witnessed a kid going into a home carrying a bag of guns. They don’t know if it’s related or not, but given the circumstances they had the SRT (Special Response Team) come out,” Thompson said.
The first officer who arrived at the scene of the home invasion reported that the suspect noticed him with a duffel bag believed to involve a handgun and rifle used in the earlier shooting. As there is a high probability that a high-powered rifle was used, the officer indicated that he had asked the SRT unit, which approved through its supervising captain.

The 36-year-old resident judicial police went to look for his house. Police said that due to the possible presence of firearms, a drone was launched through an open window that was smashed by the suspect. This action was followed through the access of the MRS officials entered the house, but did not locate anyone inside.
Thursday’s shooting came just four weeks after a past of Hallmark shootings shattered the Christmas Eve calm.
In that case, police said 3 houses and 4 cars were destroyed by bullets. The suspects have not been identified, but at the time, police believed two or even three gunmen were firing on others. Police said they recovered 31 bullet casings.
As of Friday afternoon, police had released the number of shell casings recovered at Thursday’s crime scene.
