Several prominent sports communities on Reddit are an update that could especially revolutionize the content their followers see.
In a motion that gained momentum in the r/hockey subreddit before spreading to Reddit communities in other major sports leagues, Reddit users and subreddit moderators are contemplating banning posts on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Posts about the topic on the NFL, NBA, MLB, and MLS subreddits have garnered widespread attention within those communities.
The challenge for maximum users turns out to be the login requirement that X has recently implemented. Now, when a Reddit user clicks on a post that links to X, that user will need to log in to an X account, or the connected content cannot be viewed.
For a platform like Reddit where much of its value is in aggregating content from across numerous online platforms, that can cause headaches for users who simply want to view the content and move on.
Some Reddit users suggest that subreddits require embedded videos or screenshots of X posts instead of a direct link to the posts in question due to the new login requirements.
If those regulations were implemented, the primary sports subreddits would look very different. Currently, four of the five most sensible articles of the day on r/NBA are links to X. Likewise, most sports subreddits are filled with X links on their main pages.
A ban on X would also have broad implications for journalists, group accounts, and internet sites that rely on traffic generated through those Reddit communities as part of their audience. Reddit communities serve as a voice for reports or stories first published on X. Often, those X posts come with direct links to someone’s work, which means that a viral Reddit thread can have a direct impact on someone’s bottom line.
For now, the X Bluesky option does not require login for users to view the content, leading some Reddit users to recommend posting links from there.
If those bans are implemented, it would be one of the most significant symptoms of developing user frustration with continued tweaks to X that diminish what was once a user-friendly experience.
