WASHINGTON (AP) — In an announcement postponed by the Los Angeles wildfires, President Joe Biden on Tuesday designated two sites in California as national monuments that will honor Native American tribes while shielding picturesque mountains and deserts from mining and energy development.

Biden made the designations an occasion at the White House, a week later, and in the other aspect of the country of how, first, he planned to do so, with a speech in the Eastern Valley of Coachella in California.
The president landed in California on January 6, but went to Los Angeles before the strong winds, which helped to cause Los Angeles’s flames, forced the officials to the event. Biden formally created the Chuckwalla National Monument, in Southern California near Joshua Tree National Park, and the Sáttítla Highlands National Monument, in Northern California.

The declarations bar oil and natural gas drilling, as well as mining and other exploration and production initiatives, on the 624,000-acre (2,400-square-kilometer) Chuckwalla site, and roughly 225,000 acres (800 square kilometers) near the California-Oregon border.
The protected area encompasses natural wonders including the Painted Canyon of Mecca Hills and Alligator Rock, and is home to 50-plus rare species of plants and animals like the desert bighorn sheep and the Chuckwalla lizard — which the monument is named for, the White House said in a statement.
During the event, Biden spoke of taking his young people to national monuments throughout the year when they were young to “attend to the majesty, to the beauty. “
“Our national wonders are the heart and soul of this nation,” he said. “It’s a birthright we pass on from generation to generation.”

The realities of monuments honor beyond tribal demands. Many Native American tribes and environmental teams have lobbied for the designation of Chuckwala National Monument, while the Pit River Tribe has run for the federal government to designate Sáttítla Highlands National Monument.
Biden joked, saying that they are careful not to speak evil in Sáttitrla, then had trouble pronouncing it. When he sat down to point out the official acts, he simply described it as a “highlands” monument, meaning he didn’t have to consult the proof.
The designations are components of a greater management effort of Biden to remain at least 30% of the US lands and waters until 2030. They adhere to the recent Biden resolution that prohibits the new drilling in the fuel on the high seas and in high sea in most American coastal waters, adding. California.
It was an attempt to thwart the new Republican administration’s conceivable efforts to do more offshore drilling, but it’s also an order that the president Donald Trump’s choice quickly promised to oppose.
