Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has announced plans to build a factory in Japan, which will be controlled through Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), a majority-owned subsidiary of TSMC.
The new factory in Japan will build 6nm and 7nm elegance procedure nodes that, when TSMC’s new facility is operational in Japan, will make it the most complex semiconductor production facility for logic chips in Japan. TSMC expects its new Japan-based factory to begin operations this year, with plans to start operations by the end of 2027.
TSMC’s production of 6nm and 7nm chips at its current factory in Japan will manufacture chips for automotive, industrial, consumer and HPC-related applications. More than 3,400 high-tech professional jobs are expected to be created as a result of the new agreement. which is expected to exceed $20 billion with “a strong contribution from the Japanese government. “
The deal is between TSMC, Sony Semiconductor Solutions (SSS), DENSO Corporation (DENSO), and Toyota Motor Corporation and its further investment into Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), with TSMC’s majority-owned manufacturing subsidiary in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan for this second fab.
TSMC explained in its press release: “In reaction to the growing demand from visitors, JASM plans to begin the design of its second factory until the end of 2024. Increased production scale is also expected for JASM’s overall cargo design and supply chain power. Between the two factories, JASM’s Kumamoto site is expected to offer a total production capacity of more than 100,000 12-inch wafers per month of 40, 22/28, 12/16 and 6/7 nanometer process technologies for automotive, industrial, general. public and HPC. – similar applications. The capacity plan can be additionally adjusted according to visitor demand. With the two factories, the Kumamoto site is expected to directly create more than 3,400 high-tech professional jobs.
