A biotech manufacturer is expanding its underframe facility in Holly Springs, in southern Wake County, to tap into the region’s workforce.
Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies is a subsidiary of Fujifilm Corporation, founded in Tokyo. The company, whose new expansion plans were announced last week by the governor, deals with the progression and production of products such as vaccines, mobile and genetic treatments, and oncolytic viruses. according to the company’s press release.
Fujifilm’s existing facility in Holly Springs is still under construction, the company told Carolina Public Press in an email. In total, the completed facility will now span more than 1. 3 million square feet.
With this new expansion, the facility will be one of the largest mobile culture biopharmaceutical contract (CDMO) production and progression facilities in North America, the company said.
They will manufacture pharmaceutical ingredients in bulk for biopharmaceutical treatments and diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s, the company told CPP.
The expansion will allow the company to install bioreactors for new projects, expanding its production capacity, according to a company press release. This will meet the desires of biopharmaceutical consumers and “ensure supply chain resilience,” according to a press release from the company.
The expansion also aims to gather demands in the market, the company said, such as the growing demand for antibody-based drugs: the market for antibody-based drugs is expected to grow at an annual rate of 8% by 2030.
The company plans to invest $1. 2 billion in the project through 2028 and will create 680 new jobs through 2031, according to the North Carolina Department of Commerce.
The positions include engineers, scientists, production staff and other personnel, the governor’s workplace said. The average annual salary is expected to be $109,923, compared to the average of $74,866 for Wake County.
Fujifilm’s announcement came on April 11, the day Gov. Roy Cooper met with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and his wife, Kishida Yuko, at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, after attending a state dinner at the White House the day before.
Japan is the largest source of foreign direct investment in North Carolina, according to the governor’s report, accounting for nearly a portion of all that investment in the state. Currently, more than 30,500 North Carolinians work at Japanese companies, the governor said.
The initial structure will be operational until 2025, the company told the CPP.
In 2021, Fujifilm announced a $2 billion investment and the creation of more than 700 new jobs at the same site, in addition to its RTP campus, according to the Holly Spring local press.
The company told the PPC that proximity to the Research Triangle region is vital because of the “strong technical skills pool and proximity to universities. “
The facility is at Holly Springs Business Park, where other members come with CSL Seqirus, a provider of flu shots, according to Irena Krstanovic, Holly Springs’ director of economic development.
The facility also aims for net-zero operations by offsetting its energy needs with renewable landfill gas, on-site sunshine and annual sustainable solar power from a virtual power purchase agreement, the company said.
Fujifilm has other sites in Singapore, Denmark and Ventura County, California, according to the North Carolina Department of Commerce.
The company has been communicating with North Carolina government officials about a new expansion since the beginning of the year, the company said.
Holly Springs is ideal because of investments in water, sewer and road infrastructure, as well as sustainable energy resources and a “strong pool of varied and highly professional talent,” said Lars Petersen, president and CEO of Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies.
The North Carolina Department of Commerce said at an April 11 Economic Investment Committee meeting that the company also considers “operational synergies, proximity to patients, local incentives, features and market access. “
The state approved an Employment Development Investment Grant that would use the new tax proceeds to potentially reimburse the company for up to $14. 9 million over 12 years of the new tax gains, as well as another $3 million in network and division school formula incentives. . Services.
This depends on the company’s ability to achieve its goals of task creation and additional investments.
Since the overall amount of the grant is higher than the overall maximum ratio of deductions provided for by the Subsidies Act in the first five years, the National Economic Investment Committee at its meeting adopted a special conclusion for granting the subsidy.
The city of Holly Springs also gave the company a subsidy of 50% of taxes on assets paid over six years, amounting to $20,236,800 million. The incentive kicks in once the company generates at least $20 million in asset tax revenue for the city, Krstanovic said. saying.
Wake County submitted $30. 6 million as an incentive, according to the National Department of Commerce.
The city has notified neighborhoods adjacent to the retail park of its plans to recruit companies to the business park, and citizens “in general” support it and perceive the positive economic impact, Krstanovic said in an email.
There are no project-specific housing plans, but the network has a variety of housing options, Krstanovic said. The city is also managing its growth, adding the challenge of increased traffic, he said.
“The city already has plans to reduce traffic congestion by adding or widening roads,” Krstanovic told the CPP in an email.
Wake County and its municipalities are focused on demanding situations similar to building good enough infrastructure for startups and citizens, as well as housing affordability, Michael Haley, Wake County’s executive director of economic development, said in an email to the PPC.
Another biotech company recently announced plans to build a production facility in Wilson in March. The SCHOTT Pharma USA facility will be the first in the U. S. The U. S. Department of Homeland Security has launched a type of syringe used for bloodless storage and transportation of mRNA drugs.
