Boardman and North Jackson sites decided on for electric vehicle charging stations

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Two Mahoning Valley sites are among 22 Ohio sites planned for electric vehicle charging stations under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, or NEVI, Gov. Mike DeWine announced Thursday.

Tiffany Plaza, at the intersection of Interstate 680 and U. S. Route 224 in Boardman, and a recently completed Sheetz Travel Center at the intersection of Interstate 76 and North Bailey Road in North Jackson are indexed as winning bidding sites that earned allocation funds.

Boardman’s assignment at Tiffany Plaza is expected to collect $928,733 and bring in $742,987 in federal funding, as well as $185,747 in personal investment to install new electric vehicle fast-charging stations at the site. The North Jackson Sheetz station, with an estimated load of $932,670, gets a federal grant of $746,136 and $186,534 from the personal sector.

Francis Charging LLC is indexed as the developer of any of the projects.

The governor said the federal program will allocate a total of $16 million in second-round investment to expand 22 electric vehicle fast-charging stations at sites near Ohio freeways, state highways and U. S. highways. This cash would be supplemented by another $4 million from the personnel sector to the entire structure and facility.

Construction of the new stations could begin in late 2024 and continue until 2025, the governor said.

“As more electric cars and trucks hit Ohio’s roadways, we continue to build the infrastructure needed to enable simple and convenient trips,” DeWine said.

NEVI’s investment so far has focused on EV charging sites along Highways 270, 275, 675, 680, 71, 76 and 77; Highway 15 Condition; and U. S. routes 23, 30 and 33.

“This vital milestone helps keep Ohio at the forefront of transportation innovation, fulfilling our project to position ODOT for the future,” said Jack Marchbanks, director of the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The addition of these new stations brings Ohio closer to its goal of locating fast chargers every 50 miles in the state, the governor’s office said. Each location will be located no more than 1. 6 km from the highway and will feature four charging ports with at least 150 kilowatts of power available depending on the port. These stations will also have access to amenities such as restrooms and a place to purchase food and beverages.
