It’s official: London has lost its crown as a city in the United Kingdom.
Although the capital has won awards and titles over the years (and was named the world’s most productive city in 2023 for the ninth year in a row), it turns out that Brits aren’t so convinced.
According to a recent YouGov poll, 63% of citizens have a positive opinion of the city, which ranks third in the ranking.
17% of respondents don’t like it, and 20% have no opinion about the city.
Meanwhile, York City was the front-runner, with an impressive 74% approval rating in the popularity contest. Close behind was Edinburgh, which had an approval rating of 71%.

It’s no wonder the northern city is so supportive: Last month, York was named the UK’s “friendliest” position via the Restless. co. uk site. In 2023, it was also named one of the most “welcoming” cities in the world through Reserva. com.
Given the city’s history, old cobbled streets, and colorful culture, it’s not hard to understand why York is so well-regarded. It has also served as the backdrop for many videos and TV shows over the years. It’s even believed that the old Shambles Street animated Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley.
In 2023, just under 3 million people visited York’s top attractions and, according to its tourist board, contributed £1. 7 billion to the local economy.
Last year, York welcomed a total of 8. 9 million visitors, 1. 2 million of whom came from overseas.
