King’s Hawaiian raises the bar for planned Indiana facilities

TORRANCE, Calif. — Sweet bread company King’s Hawaiian has unveiled plans for another on-site assignment of an upcoming new production facility outside of Columbus, Indiana, that was announced last December.

Irresistible Foods Group, parent company of Torrance-based King’s Hawaiian, aims to build a 300,000-square-foot bakery and production facility near Interstate 65 on an 86-acre parcel near Taylorsville, Indiana, across from Edinburgh’s Indiana Premium Outlets. . . The food company said it plans to release the $180 million allocation this year and have the facility operational by late 2026 or early 2027.

Intended to create approximately 150 jobs in Bartholomew County, Indiana, the plant will produce the King’s Hawaiian line of baked goods and will constitute the brand’s first production in the Midwest.

This week, Columbus-area newspaper The Republic reported that Irresistible Foods has another allocation in the works for the assets that includes a $40 million investment in services and $14 million for new equipment, which would create another 150 jobs in the area. Citing an official with the Greater Columbus Economic Development Corp. , The Republic also said the county granted tax breaks to Irresistible Foods for the new allocation.

Joe Leonardo, senior vice president and chief operating officer of King’s Hawaiian, declined to provide details on Taylorsville’s future assignment because an official announcement is expected.

“The new $54 million investment is a separate project/operation, not an extension of the project announced in the past,” Leonardo said. “We will make an official announcement in the future. “

Leonardo said leases were pending and a timeline for the opening was expected soon.

“We had purchased 86 acres for the expansion of our King’s Hawaiian (the initial allocation announced in December) and the long-term growth outlook,” he explained. “Location and network are the best fit for us, and (we) have to expand the existing property. “
