City of Phoenix Grant Is Helping ‘Food Desert’ Organization Expand Its Reach

PHOENIX — Diana Gregory Outreach Services is offering food to seniors and veterans who want help, and thanks to a grant from the City of Phoenix, they will be able to expand their reach.

The organization has served more than 50,000 seniors in the valley since 2009. Many of them live in “food deserts” and are at risk of malnutrition or starvation, and may not have transportation to feed themselves properly.

According to the USDA, a food desert is explained as a domain with a poverty rate of 20% or more, where at least 500 people, or 33% of the population, are located at least 1. 6 km from the nearest grocery store.
