Arla Foods to close a UK dairy after failing to find a buyer

Change language:

The dairy primary last week announced plans to close the Melton Mowbray dairy, known as Tuxford and Tebbutt.

The Leicestershire plant in England’s East Midlands employs around 60 people in Arla and produces Stilton cheese.

She said in a June 25 statement: “This morning we spoke with our colleagues affected by those proposals and we are now entering an era of consultation with those colleagues. Our priority right now is to help our affected colleagues through this difficult time.

The company had put the Melton Mowbray up for sale in January but had not found any suitors.

According to Arla, Melton Mowbray is one of six dairies in the world authorized to make Blue Stilton.

The company has eight dairy plants in the UK: Taw Valley Creamery in Devon, Trevarrian in Cornwall and Stourton Creamery in Yorkshire.

Last month, Arla announced that it would increase its investments in the UK and that this spending would bring the company’s total investment there in 2024 to more than £300 million ($377 million).

On the day of the British Farm to Fork summit (May 13) organized by the UK government to talk about the country’s food security, the owner of Lurpak said that he had covered up “tens of millions” of investments in his local factories.

The cooperative plans to do so at its dairies and dairies in Lockerbie, Stourton, Aylesbury and Westbury.

The company’s Stourton plant will secure £65 million to increase its capacity to produce extended shelf life milk and carton milk production.
