iOS 18 iMessage: all the new features coming to your iPhone

iMessage is an app that millions of people use every day, but despite this, Apple has shelved it for some time.

To replace it this year. At WWDC 2024, Apple revealed a slew of innovations that come with the release of iOS 18, which is currently in developer beta and will be released for all iOS 18-compatible devices this fall, adding the new iPhone 16.

Here are all the adjustments that are coming.

After years of harassment from Google, Apple finally relented and promised to adopt the popular RCS until 2024.

No, it may not end the divide between the blue and green bubbles of iPhone-to-Android messaging, but it removes the barriers that turned Android users into second-class citizens in iMessage’s cross-platform corporate chats. This means sharing higher-quality media, reading receipts, longer character limits, and much more.

However, it’s worth noting that Apple will supposedly only release RCS Universal Profile 2. 4 instead of the existing edition (2. 6), which means it lacks end-to-end encryption and some Google-specific features.

Currently, Tapbacks (emoji replies that remain below messages and are sent regularly instead of a full reply) are limited. There are only six to choose from: a heart, a thumbs up, a thumbs down, a “Ha ha,” two exclamation points, and a query mark.

This changes with iOS 18. Al as with WhatsApp and Slack, you can use any emoji such as Tapback, opening doors to the eyes, thinking about the face or smiling with contempt if you consider it appropriate.

But Apple goes beyond its competition by allowing it to use stickers like Tapbacks as well. If you swipe left on the recommended Tapbacks, you will be able to see as many emojis and stickers as possible, for a more private approach.

Speaking of customization, Apple is ready to introduce text formatting options, which means you can make your text bold, italic, underlined, or strikethrough.

But Apple doesn’t stop there and has announced 8 special effects that can be added to any character. They are big, small, they move, settle, explode, greet, bloom and shake; it is probably not necessary to insert anything in each and every one of them. post, but a big news anyway.

Personalization doesn’t prevent that. Apple has announced “Genmoji,” or AI-generated emoji, as one of its main AI features for iOS 18.

Just type a, like a smiley face with cucumbers in your eyes, as seen above, and your iPhone will generate an emoji that will appear in your iMessage conversation.

Just keep in mind that this Apple Intelligence feature only works with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. You want an A17 Pro processor. The new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro also deserve this feature.

Sometimes it’s great to write a message that will be sent at a time of your choosing. You can do this with Gmail, but not with iMessage, until now.

With iOS 18, you can simply prepare a message, tap the “” button on the left, and a time with the “Send Later” option.

Starting with the iPhone 14, Apple introduced satellite communications when you don’t have mobile reception. The company claims to have saved lives.

With iOS 18, compatible phones will be able to send iMessages and SMS via satellite, only the former has end-to-end encryption.

There are still doubts about the long-term value of this product: Apple had first declared that satellite communications could be given for free during the first two years of an iPhone. iPhone 14, so we’re not quite there yet, where in theory, someone has to pay. At this point, it’s unclear if and when someone will do it and, more importantly, how much they’ll charge if they do.
