Care and Share Food Bank Now Supports Farmers in Their Pantries and Stores

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO)–Southern Colorado’s largest food bank is supporting local farmers, one vegetable at a time. On Tuesday, the Care and Share food bank announced that it will now source vegetables and fruits from local farmers to help fill its local food markets. The food bank will do this through the local “Food Purchase Assistance Program,” a federal program that allows farmers’ harvest and vegetables to go directly to food pantries and Care and Share retail outlets instead of the distribution center. This includes the Sunny Side Market in southeast Colorado Springs.

“I think the big difference is in the concept of taking smallholder farmers, raising them to produce more food, and then connecting them directly to our partner agencies to make sure that’s the case, and not where the food wants to be. “”Now, food can go directly from the farm to the pantry. And it’s amazing for our steadfast spouses, it’s amazing for the other people we serve,” said Nate Springs, CEO and President of Care and Share Food Bank.

The purpose of Care and Share is to continue this partnership with local farmers for years to come. But Springer said the only way to do that would be for this “food assistance program” to be extended through Congress.

For farmers who need to be a part of this partnership, you can visit the official USDA online page to find this information there.
