Jamal Musiala scored twice in two games at Euro 2024 before Germany captain Ilkay Gundogan sealed a 2-0 victory over Hungary and qualification for the last 16 with a game remaining.
Bayern Munich star Musiala scored in the 5-1 win over Scotland in the Group A opener and was the first player in the tournament to double his tally after Gundogan benefited from a Willi Orban error. A VAR review cleared the Barcelona midfielder of a foul on the Hungarian centre-back.
Musiala also scored late in a wonderfully orchestrated move by Toni Kroos, but Hungary proved to be a more serious opponent than Scotland as Marco Rossi’s side played an important role in an entertaining game in Stuttgart.
Roland Sallai came close to scoring in the first minute and the Freiburg striker denied the equaliser in first-half stoppage time after Orban deflected offside when he headed in Dominik Szoboszlai’s loose shot down the left.
The Hungarian tension continued in the second half and, after Julian Nagelsmann reinforced his German attack by bringing on Leroy Sane and Niclas Fullkrug, Barnabas Varga unnecessarily headed the post.
