The Michigan State Land Bank Authority has announced a partnership with REDICO, a full-service real estate progression and investment firm in Southfield, to revitalize and rejuvenate a historic site: the former Detroit Correctional House (DeHoCo) in Plymouth Township.
The 87-acre historic site is located just west of Beck Road on Five Mile Road. The land is home to the former DeHoCo prison, which operated from the 1930s until its demolition in 2017.
Transferred to the Michigan State Land Bank Authority through legislative efforts led by Plymouth Township Supervisor Kurt Heise, the asset has been awaiting a transformative vision for grid benefits ever since.
The State Land Bank and REDICO signed an agreement in 2018 to expand and clean up the environmentally hazardous assets and create a mixed-use project.
In June 2023, the state of Michigan will donate $10 million to the Michigan International Technology Center (MITC) Five Mile Road Improvement Project. The assignment will involve the reconstruction and widening of Five Mile Road and the installation of new traffic signals.
A Meijer store is planned on the 21 acres east of the property. REDICO and Meijer will lead and fund more than $20 million in environmental remediation and site cleanup for the property.
“We are thrilled to have Meijer anchor our new 87-acre V-Tech project, a mixed-use progression that will include appliance and advertising uses in high-tech industry, advertising and advertising spaces.
Additionally, Meijer plans to beautify the domain with landscaping, green spaces, and walking and biking trails. Clean energy projects are planned, and Meijer’s donation to Plymouth Township’s Tree Fund will purchase more than 700 trees.
Plymouth Township Supervisor Kurt Heise is a lucky figure for the project. As state representative for Plymouth and Northville townships from 2010 to 2016, Heise drafted the public legislation necessary to move ownership of criminal housing from the Department of Corrections to the Michigan Land Bank, and allocating $2 million to demolish the former home of the Detroit Correctional Criminal.
