No Kid Hungry New York City and New York City Public Schools deployed 3 cellular food trucks this summer to supply more people in the city with summer loose meals, expanding the program to traditionally low-participation spaces, adding Prospect Park in Brooklyn.
The cellular food truck will be open seven days a week. On weekdays, the truck will distribute food to young people between 10:00 a. m. and 4:00 p. m. , and between 10:00 a. m. and 3:00 p. m. on weekends, according to a statement.
The trucks will end their service on Friday, August 30.
“Summer is the hungriest time of year for young children in New York City. We see a growing lack of trust in food every year in those few months, as children lose access to loose school meals,” Rachel said. Sabella, director of No Kid Hungry New York. “By partnering with New York City public schools on mobile trucks, we can reach more communities and ensure food is easily accessible. I want to make sure that each and every family member in New York City knows that summer food must be had to ensure that children continue to receive the nutrition they need to grow and thrive.
The effort comes as a recent No Kid Hungry survey shows that 78% of New York City families said their need for food is increasing faster than their income, and 70% indicated they have found it more difficult. difficult to buy food during the last year.
Free summer food is now available at more than 1,000 locations throughout New York City, in addition to schools, parks, swimming pools, libraries, and cell trucks.
“Our schools are the center of our communities and offer essential resources for our families, adding loose summer foods to any young person who wants them,” said Department of Education Chancellor David C. Banks. “I am very proud to be able to enjoy another year of summer food and to fight against food mistrust in the five municipalities. “
No Kid Hungry has a national free meal hotline to connect families with a nearby provider to provide loose meals. Anyone 18 years of age or younger is eligible.
