As part of the visitor journey innovations, by adding the new safety search zone, a new service has been provided for Birmingham Airport (BHX) consumers who wear sunflower lanyards to discreetly make others aware of their hidden disability.
To ensure that consumers who require the Tournesol Lanyard service can access it, a new “check-in” function will be introduced. This new check-in formula will ensure that passengers with hidden disabilities can receive assistance during their journey through trained colleagues at the airport.
Starting Monday, August 5, 2024, all consumers using a sunflower lanyard will first need to register at the assisted travel office on site, before entering security. Once registered, airport groups can discuss the required point with consumers, ensuring a consistent point of service for those who want it.
Chris Wilson, Terminal Operations Manager, said: “The Sunflower Cord has been available for many years here at Birmingham Airport to help our consumers with hidden disabilities and those who need help on their adventure to get through the airport.
“This new procedure ensures that we can fully assist our consumers with the assistance they need, whether from check-in to the plane or simply with the security procedure. The choice is up to our consumers, ensuring their independence. “
Andy Wright, independent chair of the Birmingham Airport Accessibility Forum, commented on the new project: “I am aware of the increase in the number of passengers now requiring a sunflower lanyard, the majority of whom already appear to own their own cord.
