Germany: Floods and hail hit parts of Bavaria

A primary typhoon hit Upper Bavaria and Swabia in the southern Germany state of Bavaria on Friday night, flooding streets and basements and causing traffic disruptions as rain fell. trees.

The roads were transformed into a winter wonderland in mid-summer. Even snowplows and shovels had to be brought in due to the severe hail storms. In addition, outdoor events in Munich and Regensburg had to be cancelled.

In the town of Kempten, southwest of Munich, local police said roads had turned white from hail and emergency services received around 700 calls between 6 p. m. (16:00 GMT) and Saturday morning.

The hail paralyzed traffic on some roads. According to a Kempten police spokesman, some roads were white due to hail. But during the morning all the roads were clear and the water had drained.

The most affected areas were the Allgäu region and the district of Lindau, near Lake Constance and the border with Austria. Cleanup efforts, adding pumping basements, continued well into the night.

Police in Rosenheim, on the east end, reported 230 calls for intervention. Crews went to flooded basements and fallen trees on roads and, in some cases, on train tracks. No injuries were reported.

Weather situations also affected northern Germany. On Friday, heavy rains flooded basements and streets in parts of Lower Saxony.

The emergency was especially tense in the county of Grafschaft Bentheim, near the Dutch border, where the town of Nordhorn recorded more than a hundred incidents.

Flooding forced the temporary closure of a hospital emergency room, while overflowing tanks caused additional damage in residential areas. Several roads have been temporarily closed and some two hundred firefighters have been mobilized to deal with the floods.

The German Meteorological Service expects isolated thunderstorms to bring more heavy rains on Saturday and Sunday to Lower Saxony in coastal areas.
