Julian Nagelsmann said to the Germany national team after the exit from Euro 2024

Julian Nagelsmann has what he told his Germany national team after Spain knocked them out of Euro 2024 in a dramatic quarter-final.

Germany’s Florian Wirtz equalised in normal time to disallow Dani Olmo’s opening goal in the 51st minute and take the game in Stuttgart to extra time.

Penalties caught the eye when Spain scored Mikel Merino’s 119th-minute winner, with Germany eliminated from their home tournament in heartbreaking circumstances.

“Congratulations to Spain for reaching the semi-finals,” Nagelsmann said in his post-match press conference.

“The game was too open in the first half. We were better in the second half and from the 60th minute we were obviously the better team.

“Our [compensation] deficit is well deserved. We conceded the winning goal at the last opportunity. Unfortunately, we couldn’t apply enough pressure on the band.

Asked what he said to his players in the dressing room, Nagelsmann added: “I told them they didn’t deserve [to leave the competition].

“We all miss our families, but none of us wanted to leave. Since the beginning of the last six weeks, there has been a very intelligent atmosphere in the group. You can simply say that we gave everything to win this match.

“Each player, whether starting or on the bench, gave everything to win the game. It’s painful.

Germany’s defeat against Spain was the last game for legendary midfielder Toni Kroos, who retired after winning several titles in Germany and Spain and winning the World Cup with his country.

“It’s about overestimating Toni’s career,” Nagelsmann said. “It’s probably something exclusive to a German player.

“He is one of the most important German players. Everyone knows his good luck, but not everyone knows his character.

“He spoke to the team at a very difficult time for him personally. He still considers himself part of this group.

Meanwhile, Spain coach Luis de los Angeles Fuente praised his team after withstanding a German comeback to reserve their lead in the semi-finals.

“This is the time to appreciate what we have completed and enjoy this moment,” he said. “Physically we will see how we can in the coming days.

“I’m sure all my players are in position [for the semi-finals]. They play at a very high level.

“My players are insatiable. I am proud to coach players like this. I have known many of them for many years. They are used to competing at the top and have a chance to win [the tournament].

“This team will compete. Of course, there is room for improvement, but we cannot question their pride, quality and commitment.
