Myton Food Group, Morrisons’ food supplier, has opened the United Kingdom’s largest fish freezer at Cornwall’s Falfish fishing company.
The £12. 8 million Falfish Freezing Centre includes a freezing tunnel capable of freezing 112,000 fish per hour and up to 180 tonnes of sardines and other fish per day.
It also has a state-of-the-art hot fuel thawing formula and a potential zero-global warming green refrigerant that Morrisons says will help achieve its goal of net-zero operating emissions through 2035.
Plans for the site began in 2021, when Morrisons acquired its long-term supplier, Falfish.
The opening of the new one represents the largest investment made on the Cornish coast in a generation, with DEFRA offering £3. 8 million in investment through its UK Seafood Infrastructure Fund.
Morrisons prepares and manufactures more than a portion of all new products sold in its stores. Myton Food Group is the wholesale production arm of the supermarket.
Andrew Thornber, Managing Director of Myton Food Group, said: “More than 80% of the seafood sold at Morrisons retail outlets comes from our seafood operations in Cornwall, where we buy from local fishermen.
“The opening of the United Kingdom’s largest fish freezing centre only reinforces our position as one of the largest food manufacturers in the United Kingdom, but it also particularly expands our seafood export business.
“We are excited about this cutting-edge task since we sourced Falfish in 2021, which is making a very positive difference to the local industry and network and providing long-term sustainable as well as the most up-to-date fish for consumers at points of sale. Morrisons retailer.
