Mountain Avenue Market, also known as the Fort Collins Food Co-op, increases the supply of nutritious foods for low-lying populations through the Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB) program. Nourish Colorado, which administers DUFB in Colorado, has signed a contract with Mountain Ave. Market/Fort Collins Food Co-op that will factor and redeem DUFB for consumers using the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
The Fort Collins Food Co-op began in 1972 as a wholesale buying club, spearheading the supply of healthy food to Fort Collins. Located in historic Old Town Fort Collins, Mountain Ave. Market/Fort Collins Food Co-op brings together local manufacturers and consumers; provides organic and nutrient-rich foods; highlights artisanal products; and promotes guilty eating with clean, recycled boxes that consumers can fill with bulk food and food scraps sent to a local computer virus composting company.
When consumers spend $1 on SNAP at Mountain Ave Market, they get $1 on DUFB, up to $20 per visit, to redeem for new produce and herbs, dried beans and lentils, and seeds for food production. In Northern Colorado, DUFB is issued and redeemed only on the Mountain Ave market. or at two weekly and seasonal farmers markets, the Larimer County Farmers Market and the Fort Collins Farmers Market. Mountain Ave. Market/Fort Collins Food Co-op is pleased to continue to be at the forefront of offering Northern Colorado consumers possible healthy food options as the first retail food store to be a DUFB location in Fort Collins. Mountain Ave. The market is at 250 E. Mountain Ave. and it is open seven days a week, from nine to seven in the evening.
Mountain Ave. Market adopted the DUFB program, seeing it as a way to address the lack of food confidence in Northern Colorado. Hailey Neuburger and KC Trujillo are leading the coordination and outreach of this program to link with communities that will gain the most benefits. Shortly after the show’s launch in July, KC said, “It’s amazing to see the reaction from the community. I’ve noticed the joy and relief on consumers’ faces when they realize they have the opportunity to get more new products.
S. Thompson, SNAP recipient and co-op customer, said, “Thanks to Double Up Bucks, I can now bring new produce and healthy dry staples into my home without worrying about going too far over my budget. It has made a huge difference to my circle of family and we are indeed grateful for the opportunity to eat healthier and live better. It’s especially glorious to be able to enjoy those benefits at Food Co-op, a position we already love and support! These comments energize Mountain Ave. Market, from staff to board members to member owners, and demonstrate the critical importance of Double Up Food Bucks to the community.
Mountain Ave. Market/Fort Collins Food Co-op thanks Nourish Colorado and the U. S. Department of Agriculture, which funds the DUFB program, for helping us develop healthy foods.
