WAILUKU – The Maui Huliau Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides environmental education systems to Maui youth, will once again host its annual birthday party fundraiser on August 17 from 6 p. m. to 8:30 p. m. m. at the charming beachfront venue of Sugar Beach Event in Kihei.
The event will feature a five-course farm-to-table meal prepared by local chefs, a variety of short films directed by Maui’s young filmmakers Huliau, a bar operated through Sugar Beach Events and live music by Eddee Sebala. Students create films showcasing some of the local farms where ingredients for farm-to-table meals are grown, which this year include Okoʻa Farms, Haleakalā Creamery and Waipono Farm. Additionally, this year’s occasion will include a film focused on the history and importance of the Lāhainā region, created by Lāhaināluna fellows last year as part of the Maui Huliau Foundation Youth Film Program.
All proceeds from the event will benefit the Maui Huliau Foundation’s youth programs, focusing on film, leadership, zero waste, climate change, āina-based education, careers in conservation and much more. Budgeting will also help your Kūkulu Pilina. (“Making Connections”) which aims to help schools connect with network partners who can further their educational efforts and facilitate more āina-based off-campus reporting for teachers and students.
“In addition to our existing youth programs, during the subsequent school year, we have intensified our efforts especially for teachers and academics, especially in Lāhaināluna and in the countryside schools,” says Malia Cahill, executive director of the Maui Huliau Foundation. This year’s fundraiser will help us expand our efforts to build a network for those projects, both on and off campus, and foster a positive learning environment for scholars after last year’s devastating fires.
A talented team of chefs will serve new small plates and desserts. The team of volunteer chefs consists of John Cadman of Maui Breadfruit Company and Pono Pies, Lee Anderson of Sugar Beach Events, Dean Louie of UH Maui College, Maja Liotta of The Ridge Maui and Terry Manegdeg of Andaz Wailea Resort. Event sponsors are CDF Engineering, Blue Ginger Hawai’i, Hawaiian Paddle Sports and Hawaiian Electric Company.
