On August 1, 2024, Minister of Digital Affairs Taro Kono oversaw the testing of the upcoming My Number Card face-to-face verification app, which is scheduled for the end of August. In reaction to the incidents of fake My Number cards being used for identity verification, Japan’s virtual minister is advocating for the IC chip to be read on the card for stricter identity verification.
According to a recently published document, the Digital Agency will expand for this purpose an IC chip reading application that can be downloaded and used across a wide range of corporations (expanded through personal sector specialists).
The app, designed for identity verification, reads the IC chip of My Number cards using a smartphone, eliminating the need for a PIN. After this test, the app will be available for businesses to download, in coordination with the appropriate government agencies.
The app can be used through companies that are required to determine their identity under the Proceeds of Crime Act and the Mobile Phone Fraud Prevention Act, and can be downloaded on smartphones for use, in accordance with the law passed by the Japanese parliament that will allow non-public data from virtual national identity documents to be stored on smartphones.
According to the document, those using the app will obtain My Number cards from customers and then will have to read the IC chip and verify the authenticity of the card.
The progression of the application was completed at the end of July and the current phase of the application is the verification phase in which on-site demonstrations are being carried out in companies, terms of use formulas and manual formulas before its public launch at the end of July. the month.
