The 2024-2025 season of the upper school sport is already underway, although it was not football that organized the first occasion. The West Dakota Association (WDA) kicked off the school year with the first women’s golf occasion with the Watford City Invitational on Friday, August 9, followed by the East-West Classic that pitted the WDA against its Eastern rivals in Jamestown.
Two local schools were represented at both events.
The East-West Classic began play on Monday, August 12 in Jamestown at its headquarters. The groups will continue playing on Tuesday, August 13 in the same way.
Grand Forks Red River lately holds the lead with a team score of 314 on day one. West Fargo Sheyenne is in second place with a total of 315. Mandan is in third place with a 329 on the day. Minot North is tied for 7th with a score of 354, while Minot High is tied for 18th with a score of 401.
Kinzy Welstad fired an opening circular from 82 and teammate Emersyn Kopp to 86 for Minot North. Both athletes are juniors from the new school. Senior Carlie Brown at 93, freshman Katelyn Bast scored the same while junior Ally Larson scored 98.
Minot High junior Katie Thomas 94, while fellow junior Maura Alexander posted a 101, sophomore Taylor Seslauriers had a 102, freshman Kenadee Burud hit 104 and senior Senior Samantha Lentz scored a 106 on the first day.
At the Watford City Invitational, Minot North placed third with a team score of 367, while Minot High placed eighth with a team score of 388 that day. Mandan would take the top position with a team score of 335, while St. Mary’s would finish in second place with a team score of 346 in the event.
Medalist Lola Huber of St. Mary’s with a score of 77 for the day. Minot North’s Kinzy Welstad would shoot an 84 to tie for seventh. Minot High’s Kenadee Burud would record an 86 to tie for ninth in the event.
Emersyn Kopp joined Welstad on Team Sentinel with 86 points, Ally Larson with 98, Carlie Brown who fired a and Abby Speer with 103 for the event.
Minot High’s Burud was joined by Katie Thomas with a 91, Taylor DesLauriers who shot a 105, Samantha Lentz with a 106 and Maura Alexander who recorded a 113 in the meet.
