Stop-motion action metroidvania The Spirit of the Samurai has just been featured at Gamescom’s Future Games Show presented via Sid Meier’s Civilization® VII ahead of its release in autumn 2024.
In The Spirit of the Samurai, you play as 3 other characters as you fight in your village against an army of undead led by a terrifying Oni. Drawing heavily on Japanese mythology, you’ll play as the samurai Takeshi, but also as Kodama, a small but brave spirit, and Chisai, a warrior cat.
Using The Spirit of the Samurai’s combined game editor, Chisai will fight alongside Takeshi in side-scrolling 2D action sequences, but he will also do so alone, outwitting enemies towering over them in sequences directly reminiscent of classics like Limbo and Inside. Along with The Spirit of the Samurai’s unique animation style, whether you’re on the highlight or fleeing, the character has a unique technique for the enemies in front of them.
This is helped by the stop-motion animation of Spirit of the Samurai. Inspired by legendary filmmaker Ray Harryhausen, who shaped the iconic monster designs behind enduring classics like Clash of the Titans, Jason and the Argonauts, and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, this game hopefully combines his influence from Hollywood with its narrative molded in Japanese. mythology.
The Spirit of the Samurai will launch for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store this fall, and is now available on the wishlist.
