Ukrainian drone attack on Russian city of Saratov damages houses, injures one person, governor says

(Reuters) – A woman was injured and houses destroyed in two key cities in Russia’s Saratov region following a Ukrainian drone strike on Monday, the governor of the region southeast of Moscow said.

A residential complex in the city of Saratov was breached due to falling debris from drones destroyed by Russian air defense systems, regional governor Roman Basurgin said on the Telegram messaging app.

“A woman is hospitalized in serious condition,” Basurin said. “The doctors are fighting for her life. “

Earlier, Basurgin said an emergency had been deployed to affected sites in Saratov and Engels, key cities in the region several hundred kilometers southeast of the capital.

Russia has a strategic bomber military base at Engels that Ukraine has attacked several times since Moscow introduced its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

There is no immediate data available on the damage suffered by the base or on the extent of the Ukrainian attack on the region, which is several hundred kilometers from the border with Ukraine.

A video posted on Telegram via the Russian news channel SHOT shows what is known as a high-rise rental construction in Saratov, with a broken one and several broken windows on 3 floors.

In Engels, the most sensitive land for a residential construction was damaged, he added.

Reuters could not independently determine this information. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. Both sides deny that their attacks target civilians and that they say are aimed at destroying infrastructure critical to the war effort.
