Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron, acclaimed writer Sisonke Msimang and singer-activist Yvonne Chaka Chaka are a few of the most renowned female celebrities in the country, who are leaving a mark in their respective fields. We take a look at some of the most influential names as the nation celebrates Women’s Day on August 9.
Kumalo, who is popularly known as Bassie, is a TV personality, businesswoman and philanthropist. She began her career at the age of 16, when she was crowned Miss Soweto and Miss Black South Africa in 1990. She then went on to win Miss South Africa in 1994, becoming the first runner-up at the Miss World pageant that year.
Matheba is an award-winning radio host, TV presenter and style icon. Affectionately called Queen B by her fans, she was the first South African celebrity to launch an online reality show called “B*Dazzled”. Her red carpet appearances often make it to the best-dressed lists in the country, in addition to winning her accolades such as the Most Glamorous South African Celebrity by Glamour magazine in 2014 and the Most Stylish Female Celebrity by You Spectacular Awards in 2014.
Tlhabi is a journalist, author and radio presenter who worked for radio 702 for 12 years until mid-2017. She is currently pursuing a two-year, fully-paid Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism at Columbia University in New York. In 2013, she was the recipient of the Alan Paton Award for her book, “Endings & Beginnings: A Story of Healing”.
The actress came to global prominence in the 1990s with films such as “The Devil’s Advocate” (1997) and “Mighty Joe Young” (1998). Her performance in “Monster” (2003) won her the Best Actress in a Leading Role at the Academy Awards. A few of her other notable appearances include “North Country” (2005), “Hancock” (2008), “Prometheus” (2012), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015) and “Atomic Blonde” (2017). Aside from acting, she has her own charity called the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project. Theron was also named a U.N. Messenger of Peace in 2008.
Born Charlene Wittstock in Bulawayo (Zimbabwe), her family relocated to South Africa when she was 12. A swimmer by profession, she represented the nation at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. After retiring from competitive swimming in 2007, she married Prince Albert II of Monaco in 2011. Since then, she has been associated with various causes and organizations, including the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the South African Red Cross Society.
Swanepoel is a model who gained international fame for her work with lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret. Discovered by an agent in Durban at the age of 15, she went on to walk for fashion houses such as Chanel, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, Elie Saab and Christian Dior. She has also appeared in magazines including Vogue, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar. One of the world’s highest-earning models, she is also associated with the charity Mother2Mother, which works to eliminate HIV/Aids in Africa.
A writer by profession, Msimang’s work focuses on race, gender and democracy. She is the author of “Always Another Country: A Memoir of Exile and Home”. She has also written for international publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Newsweek and Al Jazeera.
Semenya is a middle-distance runner who is a two-time Olympics gold winner and three-time world champion. Following her win at the 2009 World Championships, she was subjected to gender testing and suspended from competing for almost a year. She was honoured with the South African Sportswoman of the Year Award in 2012 and the Bronze Order of Ikhamanga in 2014.
Pheto is an actress who made her debut in the Oscar-winning film “Tsotsi” (2005). She then went on to be part of movies such as “Catch a Fire” (2006), “The Color of Freedom” (2007), “How to Steal 2 Million” (2011) and “A United Kingdom” (2016). She was also seen in the TV shows “The Bold and the Beautiful” (2011-13) and “Madiba” (2017).
Nel-Peters is a model who was crowned Miss Universe 2017, only the second South African to have won the honour after Margaret Gardiner in 1978. She has a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from North-West University. She also helped develop a programme to train women in self-defence.
Chaka is a singer-songwriter, entrepreneur, teacher and humanitarian. Popular as the ‘Princess of Africa’, a few of her hit singles include “I’m Burning Up”, “I Cry for Freedom” and “Umqombothi”. In 1981, she became the first black child to appear on South African television. Aside from her musical career, she is involved with a number of charities and NGOs and even went on to establish her own charity called the Princess of Africa Foundation.
Anri du Toit, who is better known by her stage name Yolandi Visser, is the female vocalist of the rap-rave band Die Antwoord. As part of the group, she has released five albums — “$O$” (2009), “TEN$ION” (2012), “Donker Mag” (2014), “Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid” (2016) and “27” (2018).
The TV host and media mogul founded the 100 percent black-owned company, Ndalo Media, in 2007. It publishes some of the most popular and award-winning magazines in the country, including DestinyConnect, Destiny Magazine and Destiny Man. She then ventured into Ndalo Luxury Ventures and founded the high-end luxury store chain, Luminance. The entrepreneur was a part of the 2011 Forbes list of 20 Young Power Women in Africa and the Choiseul 100 Africa Index of young African leaders in 2015.
Beukes is an award-winning, best-selling novelist; her books include “The Shining Girls”, “Broken Monsters” and “Zoo City”. The former journalist has also published several short stories, essays and comics. She was also the head writer for the animated shows “URBO: The Adventures of Pax Afrika”, “Florrie’s Dragons” and “Mouk”. Her documentary, “Glitterboys & Ganglands” (2010), won the Best LGTBI Film at the Atlanta Black Film Festival.
Ferguson is an award-winning journalist and best-selling author of the memoirs, “Smacked”, “Hooked” and “Crashed”. She also serves as the features editor at True Love magazine. Her publishing imprint called MFBooks has produced over 15 titles since 2013, including Joanne Joseph’s “Drug Muled” and Pumla Dineo Gqola’s “Rape: A South African Nightmare”.
A 2011 graduate of the Young Artists Accademia of the Teatro alla Scala, the operatic soprano was the first artist in the history of the Belvedere competition to win in every category. Yende has since performed leading roles in global opera houses such as the La Scala in Milan, Italy, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, U.S. She released her debut album “A Journey” with Sony Classical. She was awarded the Silver Order of Ikhamanga in 2013.
A graduate of the University of Cape Town College of Music and the Royal College of Music in London, England, Matshikiza’s early roles have been in the operas “Parsifal”, “Salome”, “Dido and Aeneas” and “Don Carlo.” She released her debut album called “Voice of Hope” in 2014.
The award-winning media personality has cross-cultural experience in community, public service and commercial radio and television. She is well-known for her 12-year-long stint as a radio DJ for Metro FM’s “The Ultimate Midday Experience with Penny Lebyane” and for hosting the women’s show “Motswako” on SABC2 and “Sunrise” on e.tv. Lebyane was also an Influencer for a School Programme for Girls and Boys with P&G, Department of Basic Education and UNICEF in 2012.
Thusi made her acting debut in the TV series “Family Bonds” in 2006. Her other notable roles include “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” (2009), “Kalushi: The Story of Solomon Mahlangu” (2016), “Quantico” (2016-17) and “Catching Feelings” (2017). She currently serves as the host of “Lip Sync Battle Africa”.
Often regarded as South Africa’s First Lady of Comedy, Morake is popular for her edginess. The first woman to host “Comedy Central Presents” on African soil, her debut one-woman show “Herstory” (2011) was a big success. She followed it up with another one-woman show at the prestigious Edinburgh Festival in Scotland. She has also made brief appearances in several TV series such as “Soul Buddyz” (2007), “Laugh Out Loud” (2011), “Kota Life Crisis” (2014) and “Point of Order” (2015). She has also been the face of major campaigns for brands including Kelloggs and Vodacom.
Singer-songwriter, radio host and “Idols SA” judge, Unathi is a Journalism and Drama graduate from Rhodes University and International Media Studies graduate from University of Utrecht. She gained success for hosting the breakfast show “The First Avenue” on Metro FM for about a decade. She also wrote the song “Sgubhu” in the Oscar-winning film “Tsotsi” (2005).
Modiadie is a TV presenter, producer, radio DJ and actress, who is best known for her hosting gig of “Zaziwa”, one of the most popular music talk shows in South Africa. She also co-anchors the primetime lunch show in Metro FM, alongside Amon Mokoena. She was also a celebrity contestant on the eighth season of the reality series “Strictly Come Dancing”.
