Construction of a unique, $34 million sports and event center at The Grounds in Roseville is still six months from completion, but demand for it has already led event organizers from as far away as Florida to book and pay for opening day events.
“It’s very exciting. We are giving event organizers almost daily tours. We’ve got people from across the nation coming just to see this venue because there is nothing else like it in Northern California,” said Kim Summers with Placer Valley Tourism.
The 158,000-square-foot event center is so big it will house 12 full-size basketball courts, each with its own scoreboard. Or, that same space can be converted to 24 volleyball courts.
“But the big difference is the 35-foot ceiling. That means for the first time we can attract major cheerleading competitions. And cheerleading is big money. We’ve already signed our first cheerleading event for this area,” Summers said.
Placer Valley Tourism estimates the event center will lead to double the number of hotel bookings. It will also generate $12 million in economic impact annually.
Roebbelen Construction is scheduled to complete the project in time for March events.
“We had national experts tour this facility, and they’ve said we’ve checked every box and covered everything. The only event we can’t host is baton,” Summers said . “That’s because you need 40-foot ceilings.”
Construction of the sports and event complex broke ground at The Grounds in Roseville in January of this year.
