PUTRAJAYA: Over five million Malaysians will be getting into their sports gear throughout October in conjunction with the National Sports Month.
Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (pic) said over 1,000 activities will be held nationwide across the month.
“The National Sports Month aims to get everybody, from young and old, to be involved in a sporting or fitness activity.
“This is in line with our ‘Sports For All’ agenda, by which we aspire to become a sporting nation.
By having a month-long programme, we will ensure that this is not just a one-off thing and so that sports can be a culture among all Malaysians,” said Syed Saddiq at the launch of the National Sports Month at IOI City Mall here Tuesday (Oct 1).
The summit event of the National Sports Month will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Sports City in Bukit Jalil on Oct 12.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will officiate the event as well as take part in the day’s programme.
The ministry will be organising the sporting activities, varying from fitness activities, recreational, motorsports, e-sports and even those for the disabled as well as the elderly.
Syed Saddiq also said that more funds are needed for women’s sports development in the country.
“There should be more focus on women’s sports. A lot of times, its development is hampered by funding. The ministry is committed to giving its full support to ensure that women’s sports get the backing it deserves, ” said Syed Saddiq.
At the launch event, the ministry also announced sportswear retailer Al-Ikhsan Sdn Bhd and telco company Celcom Axiata Berhad as the main sponsors of the programme.
Syed Saddiq also announced that Malaysians can enjoy discounts on sportswear at selected retailers throughout the month.
