Sports briefs: San Marin tennis sweeps singles to top San Rafael

San Rafael captured an early 2-1 lead thanks to a pair of doubles victories, but the San Marin High girls tennis team rallied, sweeping the singles slate to secure a 5-2 win. No. 3 singles Izzy Axelsen and No. 4 singles Natalie Buerger clinched the victory for the Mustangs (2-6).

Leia Minter had 17 assists, four aces and four digs to lead Redwood to a 25-11, 25-6, 25-8 win against Novato. Katelyn McKnew added six kills and two blocks while Noe Corren had 15 digs, six assists and four aces for the Giants (17-3, 4-0 MCAL). Novato (3-17, 0-4) got three kills and five digs from Emerson Burt while Naia Nahinu dished out seven assists.

The Giants remain one of three unbeaten teams in league and are set to take part in the first meeting of the three teams on Friday when they host Marin Catholic.

Lili Smith and Quinn Rothwell scored a goal apiece to lift Tam to a 2-1 home victory against Berkeley.

Rebecca Smith led the way with six kills as Dominican opened the match well but faded down the stretch of a 25-22, 25-14, 25-15 loss to Chaminade on Monday night.

Libero Hana Wyles added a match-high 13 digs for the Penguins (1-9, 1-4 PacWest) while setter Taylor Melchiori had a team-high 10 assists.

Freshmen Claire Shubin and Ashley Pan posted 9-over-par scores in their tournament debuts for Dominican, helping the Penguins finish 13th at the Dixie State Fall Invitational at Sand Hollow Golf Course in Hurricane, Utah. Rachel Thompson posted the lowest score of her career for the Penguins, a 24-over, to finish tied for 59th.
