Scott Barrett’s Audio Video class at Hargrave High School launched the Huffman Sports Media Twitter account

Barrett decided to make this year’s class about sports and promoting the school’s teams and athletes.

Students in the class put together interviews with coaches and athletes, highlight reels and GIFs.

The focus of Barrett’s class has always been teaching students to use the video editing software Adobe Premiere.

“When you throw the whole sport aspect of it in there, they’re a little bit more excited about it,” he said. “They’re willing to jump in and dive in and do it instead of giving them an assignment and telling them they have to do it.”

The class launched the Twitter account Huffman Sports Media, @MediaHuffman.

The account, which launched at the beginning of this school year, already has 183 followers.

“If you look at any college social media account, we’re trying to make it as close to that as we possibly can,” Barrett said.

Huffman ISD athletic director Mike McEachern liked the idea as soon as Barrett brought it up to him at the end of last school year.

He likes that it gives students exposure to sports media and that it spotlights different aspects of Hargrave athletics.

Barrett is looking forward to the volleyball and football playoffs and to covering other sports when their seasons begin.

He is considering having students in the class help create athletic recruitment videos for Hargrave athletes.

Barrett emphasized that the class is still in the early stages, so everybody is still figuring out what they want to do. He is still deciding whether he wants to launch a Facebook page in addition to the Twitter account.

There was so much interest in the class that Barrett has two periods of it with about 60 total students.

“I think the class will grow even more over time, and they will be able to broaden their scope on what they want to cover,” McEachern said.
