New sports-focused gastropub named The Degenerate set to open in Villa Heights in 2020

Owners Greg Guillorn and John Wentworth want The Degenerate to be elevated yet approachable with a heavy emphasis on sports. The aim is to create an environment where you can kick back and watch sports with a cocktail in hand.

Menu background: Greg and John met bartending at a craft beer bar in Manhattan and moved to Charlotte in October 2017 with hopes of opening their own restaurant and gastropub, so the men is “internationally inspired and reflective of the food that John and I became accustomed to in Astoria, Queens,” Greg said.

Chef Mike Noll of Bardo will oversee the menu, which will feature a variety of handhelds, shareable plates, sandwiches and entrees. They will be open for dinner at 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and brunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday.

Food: The full menu isn’t finalized yet, but you can expect to see a New York-style falafel sandwich, tater tot poutine with oxtail and breakfast bahn mi to be included.

Drinks: The drink menu will include 11 draft beers, a full bar and cocktail list (including a few draft cocktails), wine and bottled and canned beer. The beer will run the gamut, ranging from a smoked German märzen to more familiar domestics.

Greg and John expect The Fishbone (house made aquavit, lavender, dill) and Moon Pig (a barbecue-inspired cocktail with bacon fat-washed local moonshine) to be popular cocktails.

Location/timeline: The exact address is 2116 North Davidson Street, in the same strip as The Hobbyist and Pho @ NoDa. Anticipated opening is early 2020.

Amber from Black Dove Interiors is the architect, and James Craig with Lat Purser led the tenant lineup.
