WARSAW, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) — The world champions sealed their second victory at FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup, beating the hosts Japan 25-23, 25-17, 19-25, 25-17 in Fukuoka on Wednesday.
Poland carried the pressure of being the favorite, as Vital Heynen’s side won two first sets. Then the Japanese players cut the deficit to 2-1, mainly thanks to the effectiveness of Yuji Nishida, who was the best scorer for his team with 16 points.
The Euro Volley’s bronze medalists responded in the best possible way, controlling the fourth set. They won 25-17 and secured their second victory in the tournament.
Japan failed to contain Bartosz Kurek. The Polish attacker, who didn’t play at European Championship due to the serious injury, scored 15 points.
“Our mentality has always been the same. We always give our 100 per cent and don’t look on our opponents. The mentality doesn’t change whether we play Japan, the United States or Tunisia. We just go out there on the court and try to win every game,” Kurek was quoted as saying by the official site of the FIVB World Cup.
Poland take the second place with six points, same like the leaders Brazil. Japan are seventh with three points.
On Friday the world champions will play against USA, while the hosts battle against Tunisia.
