Protesters in Hong Kong tore down a China National Day banner and threw eggs at a poster of President Xi jinping on October 1 as tens of thousands took to the streets.
Up to 150,000 protesters took part, according to opposition activists cited by journalists on the ground, despite a ban on protests by authorities.
Police deployed tear gas in multiple areas across Hong Kong, according to the South China Morning Post, with much of the local metro network forced to close, and businesses across the island shutting their doors for the day. Credit: Antony Dapiran via Storyful
