Spring sports notebook: Westfield tops Spring at UH Stadium

The Mustangs and Lions matchup is one of most popular rivalries in the area and this year fans had the chance to experience it at the University of Houston after the game was moved to meet the increased demand in tickets.

Westfield (3-1, 1-0) shutout Spring 37-0 in the District 16-6A opener, Sept. 27, at TDECU Stadium.

The Mustangs scored on Ashton Callaway’s 12-yard, 20-yard and 27-yard pass from Cardell Williams, David Alvarenga’s 23-yard field goal, Javion Davis’s 1-yard fumble return and Jalen Francis’ 21-yard pass from Williams.

Westfield lost for the first time this season against North Shore 24-21 in non-district, Sept. 13, at Galena Park ISD Stadium.

The Mustangs are scheduled to face Dekaney in district, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m., at Leonard George Stadium.

Spring ISD’s new $38 million, 8,000-seat football stadium (Planet Ford Stadium) on Cypresswood Drive is expected to open mid-October following a delay.

In volleyball, the Lady Mustangs (8-17, 3-2) were scheduled to host Benjamin Davis, Oct. 1, and host Spring, Oct. 4.

The Lady Mustangs beat host Aldine 3-1 in district, Sept. 24.

The Lady Mustangs are scheduled to visit Dekaney, Oct. 8, and host Eisenhower, Oct. 11.

Dekaney

The Wildcats (3-1, 1-0) defeated MacArthur 56-0 to open District 16-6A, Sept. 26, at Thorne Stadium.

The Wildcats scored on Jacquez Shaw’s 1-yard run, Shaw’s 21-yard pass from Daelyn Williams, Ronnie Thomas’ 52-yard interception return, Williams’ 7-yard and 4-yard run, Omarion Thomas-Keener’s 60-yard pass from Williams, Cyriece Taylor’s 22-yard run and Titus Beard’s 10-yard punt return.

Dekaney lost its perfect record against Ridge Point 42-41 in non-district, Sept. 13, at Spring ISD Stadium. The Wildcats lost the game on a missed game-tying point after touchdown.

The Wildcats are scheduled to face Westfield in district, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m., at Spring ISD Stadium.

In volleyball, were scheduled to visit Eisenhower in district, Oct. 1, and visit MacArthur, Oct. 4.

The Lady Wildcats lost to visiting Spring 3-0 in district, Sept. 24, and host Aldine, Sept. 27.

The Lady Wildcats are scheduled to host Westfield in district, Oct. 8, and visit Nimitz, Oct. 11.

Spring

The Lions (2-2, 0-1) opened 16-6A with a 37-0 loss against Westfield, Sept. 27, at TDECU Stadium.

The Lions suffered their first loss vs. Fort Bend Travis 53-49 in non-district, Sept. 13, at Mercer Stadium. The Lions led 14-0 after one quarter via a 5-yard run and 50-yard pass and scored five more times on Aldyn Bradley’s 28-yard run, Jarrell Farr’s 17-yard run, Bradley’s 7-yard pass to Bailee Davenport, Bradley’s 74-yard run and Caleb Jones’ 16-yard run.

Spring is scheduled to visit Nimitz in district, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m., at Thorne Stadium.

In volleyball, the Lady Lions (15-15, 7-0) beat host MacArthur 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-22) to win their 50th straight district match, Oct. 1, and visit Westfield. Oct. 4.

The Lady Lions beat host Dekaney 3-0 (25-10, 25-2, 25-12) in district, Sept 24, and beat visiting Eisenhower 3-0 (25-23, 25-8, 25-21) Sept. 27.

The Lady Lions are scheduled to host Nimitz in district, Oct. 8, and host Davis. Oct. 11.

Frassati Catholic

The Falcons (1-3) suffered a 41-6 loss against host St. John XXIII, Sept. 27.

Frassati Catholic lost to visiting Savio 48-14 in non-district, Sept. 20.

Frassati Catholic kicks off TAPPS D3-4 play by hosting Lutheran North, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.

In volleyball, the Lady Falcons (28-4) defeated Second Baptist 3-0, Sept. 30, were scheduled to host Emery, Oct. 2, host Fort Bend Christian, Oct. 3, and visit Lutheran South, Oct. 5.

The Lady Falcons beat visiting Westbury Christian 3-0, Sept. 24, and beat host Cy Christian 3-0, Sept. 26,

The Lady Falcons are scheduled to host Cristo Rey Jesuit, Oct. 8, and host Lutheran South, Oct. 10.
