SYMRNA, Tenn. (WTVF) — Smyrna Police are warning about a lucrative scheme that takes advantage of our southern hospitality.

Officers say scammers are going up to strangers pretending to be in dire need to borrow your cell phone.

Once they have your phone in hand, they help themselves to money from one of your accounts.

After you hand it over, that person will send themselves money from apps set up on your phone such as Apple Pay, Venmo, Cashapp, and PayPal.

Officers say scammers can also use information from the victim’s phone for a variety of Identity theft scams.

Now what’s so alarming about this is once this money has been sent, there is nothing the police department or third party companies can do to get the money back.
