Unique Philip Johnson mansion in Dallas sees $8 million price cut

A Dallas home designed by the visionary behind some of Houston’s most famous buildings is now $8 million dollars more affordable than when it was originally listed.

World-renowned architect Philip Johnson’s 1963 creation, which the New York Times has called “campy” and “strangely fascinating” is now $19.5 million. It was originally listed at $27.5 million in 2014. The house has been on- and- off the market for the last four years but was recently re-listed by Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty.

Johnson was born in Ohio, but is well  known for his Houston-based projects. The late architect held an honorary doctoral degree from the University of Houston and designed some of Houston’s most famous buildings.

Among his local notable works are Pennzoil Place, Transco Tower, the John de Menil House, the Academic Mall/Chapel of St. Basil at the University of Saint Thomas and and The Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture at the University of Houston.

The mid-century modern residence at 10210 Strait Lane in Dallas’ Preston Hollow neighborhood was Johnson’s only Dallas creation. It features a curious foyer which welcomes guests with a dramatic succession of arches and curved double-staircase. The striking entrance is part of the comprehensive remodel the home underwent, which lasted a cool six years to complete.

The Times describes the room as having “grand proportions and a relentlessness of arches, but the arches are impressive from without and frame romantic views of the house’s six-and-a-half-acre site from within.”

The six-bedroom, 11,000-square-foot main house includes a media room and a full-sized tennis court on the six-acre territory. It boasts stark white walls and neutral stone accents throughout.

The property has also been used as a venue of sorts, including playing hosts to concerts, galas and charitable functions. Owners Naomi Aberly and Larry Lebowitz have been known to host former President Barack Obama at this property on a few occasions.
