After Hurricane Dorian, students at River City Science Academy (RCSA), a local charter school, decided to raise money to help with the relief efforts in the Bahamas. RCSA provides a STEM-focused education and has four campuses in Duval County. According to the school, an emphasis is placed on character education and the study of traits like responsibility and empathy help the students become more “well-rounded citizens.”
In order to raise money for the relief effort, the students were allowed to pay $5 and wear clothes other than their school uniforms, as long as the clothes fit within the school’s dress code. The students could donate additional amounts, too, if they wanted. All four campuses participated and the school raised $7,941.24 for their donation. Of the four locations, RSCA Mandarin’s donation of $2,766.04 was the largest.
After some research, the school chose an international non-profit founded by veterans, Team Rubicon, to receive the funds. The school had looked for an organization already in the Bahamas and that would use the entire donation for the hurricane relief. Team Rubicon works in disaster struck areas and uses disaster response to help veterans transition back into civilian life. In addition, PepsiCo is currently matching Team Rubicon donations, so River City Science Academy’s donation will double and become $15,882.48. The school said that the students at all four campuses were very excited about the amount they were able to raise for the Bahamas hurricane relief effort.
