Wiener dog races at country fair to raise money for the Humane Society

LA UNION – The St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Country Fair is in its 34th year of entertaining thousands of people from the surrounding area including El Paso, Las Cruces, Canutillo and Anthony. The fair is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5. 

Event organizers said they are expecting about 2,000 visitors.

This year don’t miss the annual photo-worthy “Great Dachshund Stampede” and doggie costume contest. If you have an adorable weiner dog you can enter for just $5. A portion of all race entry fees will be donated to the Humane Society of El Paso. Races begin at 10 a.m. Ribbons will be given to first, second and third place for both the race and costume contest plus a bag full of doggie goodies. 

This year also look for special races for all dog breeds. All the races are in support of spaying and neutering animals. 

Rev. Daniel Cave will be offering a blessing of the animals at noon and 3 p.m. at the church. 

The event will feature games, face painting, a jumping balloon, a barn sale and 45 vendors including food and arts and crafts. The fair will also offer smoked brisket, a pie baking contest, homemade goodies and a bake sale Local band Route 66 will be performing a mixture of classic rock from 2 to 6 p.m. 

While you’re there, get a brief history tour of the church and its beautiful stained-glass windows which have been part of the valley for more than 100 years.
