SASKATOON, SK, Oct. 25, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Join us for a live demonstration of a new generation of robots that will deliver world-class diagnostic healthcare in rural and remote spaces in Saskatchewan and beyond.

Virtual Health Hub, in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technologies of Saskatchewan (SIIT), will showcase two other robotic devices designed to provide remote physical care in a special open space on October 25 from 10 a. m. to 10 a. m. 12 p. m. The occasion will take place on the SIIT Saskatoon campus (229 4th Avenue), on the first site of PAWÂCIKÊWIKAMIK: The Innovation Collective.

One of the highlights of the open space will be the seven-degree-of-freedom ultrasonic robotic arm, the first of its kind in Canada. The Director of the Virtual Care and Remote Assistance Program, Dr. Ivar Méndez, will be present. to demonstrate and talk about how those technologies will shape the delivery of physical health services in rural and remote areas in the long term.

“In partnership with SIIT, we are testing a new generation of robots for ultrasound diagnostics,” said Dr. Mendez. “This robotic arm can bring diagnostic facilities like ultrasound to communities that don’t have access to those facilities. Robotic platforms combined with synthetic intelligence (AI) will play a vital role in healthcare delivery in the future. “

The task aims to provide access to physical care to Saskatchewans living in remote communities or communities that do not have access to ultrasound facilities that require an on-site sonographer. With trained staff operating from a central location, the robotic arm is controlled to perform ultrasound remotely without the need for the patient to travel long distances to access essential facilities.

Highly trained staff is imperative to the expansion of those services, making SIIT a partner in the HRV initiative.

“As a national leader in Indigenous fitness care education, partnering with VHH is a natural extension of SIIT’s strategic goals of serving our communities, many of which are rural, remote, and northern,” says SIIT President Riel Bellegarde. “SIIT is committed to being a replacement leader in the implementation of the TRC related to physical care (18-24, 55) and the UNDRIPP Calls to Action to achieve parity in physical care outcomes for Indigenous Canadians. “

Indian Institute of Technology of Saskatchewan (SIIT)

SIIT was established in 1976 through Saskatchewan First Nations leaders representing all areas of the treaty. Today, SIIT remains a First Nations-run educational institution, one of only four credit-granting post-secondary establishments in the province and the only accredited Indigenous institution. It provides adult learners with academic, vocational, and technical education, as well as support for employment and career growth. Indigenous students are at the core of SIIT and represent more than 95% of the student body.
