Chen and Waldron built a 24-foot cabin, hired a service that installed makeshift toilets on the property, and brought in their own electricity generator. Pamela Gibson, a member of the Castle Valley City Council, discovered the harrowing sight on Sept. 1. 3, the day after the party.
He discovers moving vans filling tables and tents with food, which were not part of the order the couple had sent to the city. Shards of glass from votive candles strewn along the road spilled into the area where tourists wander. To make matters worse, the trucks had dug tire tracks into the ground and crushed plants as they carelessly made their way to the site.
When Gibson returned to the scene later that day, he was shocked to find bound cardboard boxes and dozens of torn and bulging bags dumping trash and rotting food still strewn about. The glass and candles also remained. All of that had been discarded from the beloved furniture used for the wedding.

“It was a publicity event, small by [L. A. ] standards, I’m sure, but it still deserves not to have happened,” Gibson told SFGATE. “And they’re not guilty of it, that’s what literally infuriates me. “. There are 4 days where the public has not been able to enjoy what they deserve to be able to enjoy because of those other people who do not hesitate to distort anything in order to celebrate their great little wedding.
Andrew Chen (partner, Twitter influencer Andreessen Horowitz) and Emma Waldron (former Miss Ireland) lied to illegally download a marriage license on a piece of land, ransacked the premises, destroyed the plants and suffered no consequences. Chen and Waldron, who live between Los Angeles and San Francisco, have high-paying jobs in the tech world. Chen chooses investments in video games and multiverse for venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz; Waldron runs an artificial intelligence startup called Spuddie, which according to the site we should create a “better bud,” which is a virtual potato, to “take care of your emotional and intellectual eater. “In the past she won the name Miss Ireland in 2010.
After news of their destruction spread, the newlyweds began deleting evidence of their marriage from social media. However, some eagle-eyed users copied their photos and videos before deleting them and soon streaming them as well.
Neither Chen nor Waldron responded to the Men’s Journal’s request for an interview.
Gibson informed SFGate that, about 3 months after the wedding, he is still picking up glass and pieces of trash from the scene. She, along with the city’s mayor, Jazmine Duncan, and other council members submitted a letter to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) pleading with them to allow long-term weddings at the venue.
BLM responded to the request on Sept. 7. According to the email, they would contact Chen and Waldron “in partnership with BLM Law Enforcement. “
On Wednesday, Gibson told the Men’s Journal that he wasn’t sure about the prestige of the bureau’s investigation or what authority BLM has to impose sanctions on Chen and Waldron.
“Personally, I wish BLM wouldn’t allow receptions at this location,” Gibson told us. “This is also what the city wants, as their letter says. It is a very special place for the public to enjoy the beauty of nature. that no individual or organization be allowed to use it for personal functions.
To some extent, Gibson understands the frenetic speed of wedding planning. While he calls their habit “just thoughtless,” he admits that “I don’t think Chen and Waldron intended to disrespect” the land.
“You can be very busy making plans for a wedding. And coming from such a distinct position in this vast, arid environment, it means they probably didn’t think about the consequences of their event,” Gibson explained. “Someone took it upon themselves to clean up the mess, which has been done without delay afterwards, not the next day and in fact not 3 days later. It’s just thoughtlessness.
Gibson continued, “I think it would be if the couple wrote a letter apologizing for the mess that was left for days. I don’t think they wanted that to happen. And we hope BLM will reconsider how to design the granting of letters of agreement similar to the one advised through the Castle Valley City Council.
The Chen/Waldron fiasco follows several high-profile stories involving inconsiderate tourists. Over the course of the summer, several other people etched their names into the Roman Colosseum. Also in Italy, several German tourists were arrested for spray-painting Florence’s Vasari corridor.
