IMEI is a unique 15-digit serial number that uniquely identifies a GSM or UMTS cell phone. It is made up of 4 parts and provides information, such as the manufacturer, to the cellular network. It’s posted to the device underneath the battery.

The IMEI can be used to “ban” a stolen phone, making it difficult for the thief to use it with a new SIM card.
